Discover the story behind Broome Island
Broome Island is a unique campsite on the River Soar, only accessible by boat, offering a secluded getaway for community groups, canoe adventures, families, couples, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and more.
Broome Island was bequeathed by the Hemmings family to the 28th Leicester (Wigston) Scout Group in 1980, beginning its journey as an outdoor activity venue.
After falling into disrepair, the District Scout Network started renovating the site and regrassing the camping areas.
Broome Island Community Interest Company was formed as an independent non-profit to operate the site and make waterways accessible to all. The land was protected for community use for the next generation.
A generous grant from Tarmac Landfill Communities Fund allows the cabins to be renovated, insulated and fitted with solar power systems.
Advance reservations are required for all visits. You can choose between exclusive use of the site or shared usage with other groups.
Youth groups receive exclusive access automatically, ensuring a safe and dedicated space for their activities.
Visitors may rent kayaks from us or bring their own narrowboat, kayak, or paddleboard to reach the island.
Groups of eight or more people attract a £100 wardening fee; the warden stays on site on locally on-call to to maintain safe, hygienic facilities.
The nearby villages of Mountsorrel and Barrow Upon Soar have full amenities including shops, restaurants and pubs. Everything you need is just a short journey away.
